Identifying competencies, talents, values, life styles and possible future goals.

Many counsellors have raised the issue that students at the age of 13 to 16 are asked to select subjects without really knowing themselves.

Pioneer has been developed to increase students' self-awareness and personal understanding. This program consists of two types of questionnaires, each with a unique aim as explained below. In each of the programs students will be asked to complete an on-line survey. Immediately after finishing they are able to print their own report.
The responses will be displayed in 5 colours, each colour representing students with similar characteristics.

Pioneer 1 is recommended for grade 8/9 or years 9/10 and students are asked to indicate their natural competencies and talents in order to increase their awareness of their strengths and to show how these link to subjects offered at school and possible future educational areas.

Why is Pioneer 1 relevant for students?

  • Pioneer will show innate strengths.
  • Pioneer contributes to self confidence.
  • Pioneer inspires and motivate them to do well in school.
  • Pioneer helps to allocate extra-curriculum activities.
  • Pioneer supports students to consider what types of school subjects would match their profile.
  • Pioneer will also introduce students into how their strengths could relate to some professional areas.

Pioneer 2 is recommended for grade 10 or year 11 and students are asked to identify their values, preferred lifestyles, and study or work environment in order to find out if these are matching their academic interests and future expectations.

Why is Pioneer 2 relevant for students?

  • Pioneer provides students with insights into what they may wish to achieve in life.
  • Pioneer helps them to think about different life styles.
  • Pioneer will identify what motivates the student.
  • Pioneer raises awareness about job satisfaction.
  • Pioneer helps to identify future goals.

How would your school benefit?

  • Students will have started to think about themselves in their future context.
  • Students will have important additional information to decide on subject choices.
  • There will be less of a risk that students miss out on a subject at an early stage.
  • Students who identify a goal are more determined to do well in class.
  • Students are better prepared for life after school.

It will take only 15/20 minutes for students to complete each survey. All the information will be stored on a personal Step One webpage.
